Becoming Women Retreat
Becoming Women is a 3-day contemporary Rite of Passage retreat for girls that focuses on empowering them as young women coming of age. A “Rite of Passage” is a celebration that marks a girl’s transition into womanhood. It is the beginning of a new stage of awareness and responsibility, a movement towards the next level of maturity and attaining life skill competencies through the passing on of wisdom, knowledge and experience by trained facilitators and community members. During the retreat, girls learn about what it means to be a woman and participate in group dialogue, experiential exercises, self-care practices, art, story telling, physical activities, a ropes course and creative projects.
I facilitated these retreats as part of Young Women Encircle, a nonprofit organization I founded in 1998. I also partnered with
Place Called Home and Youth Mentoring, bringing this retreat to their community of girls.
